Meet Sonia

Hi There!
My name is Sonia Stanger (she/they). I’m a white settler, bisexual, genderqueer human in the final semester of my master’s in educational psychology at the University of Regina, on Treaty 4 territory. I’m delighted to be doing my counselling practicum with the Fellow Travellers Healing Collective, where I’m now accepting clients for pro-bono counselling.
I am a warm, curious, and open-hearted/minded person who aims to support clients in building a meaningful, vibrant life as they define it. I know myself to be playful by nature and very attuned to the beautiful and joyful parts of life, but also deeply in touch with the dark and challenging aspects. Having explored these depths myself, I’m prepared to meet clients there, too.
My counselling toolbox is diverse; I integrate a variety of approaches and techniques that emphasize creativity, autonomy, and flexibility. My goal is for the process to be informed by clients’ values, context, and whole humanity, including the mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual. I view my role as walking alongside clients on their healing journeys and offering a safe, encouraging space to visit for resources and help along the way. I aim to offer a space that welcomes people’s authentic ways of being, knowing, and doing and commit to approach healing work in ways that are decolonizing, anti-racist, anti-ableist, queer- and neurodiversity- affirming, and sex positive.
I was drawn to this path after realizing I had ADHD in my 20s and learning firsthand how transformative therapy can be. As I embarked on my own (ongoing) healing process, I became more and more interested in why the things that helped me did and started learning about counselling from an academic perspective. I obtained my BA Honours in psychology from the U of R in 2022. The more I learned about therapy and neurodiversity and worked to reconnect to my full, wonderfully weird and messy self, the more I felt called to see whether I might be well suited to helping others do the same. I found that I was, and here we are.
Outside of therapy, you can find me nose-deep in a book (probably a romance novel with dragons in it), checking out some live music or theatre, or co-hosting a very silly show about movies on 91.3 FM CJTR, Regina Community Radio.
If you think we might work well together and are interested in connecting for counselling, please reach out to hello@fellowtravellershealing.com and ask for Sonia.
